What they're saying

Buel D. Rodgers and I share a similar philosophy when it comes to coaching young athletes and he shares that approach in "Inside Youth Sports". So often, well-meaning parents volunteer as coaches to help out, but are not equipped with the knowledge or tools to help them succeed. Rodgers talks about things like depressurizing situations for young athletes, teaching them when the time is right and making sure that they take valuable lessons away from their experience, whenever the journey may end; lessons that could help them throughout their lives.

About "Inside Youth Sports"

The youth sports market has exploded into a competitive, high-pressure, $40 billion industry. The system thrives on the dream of college athletic scholarships, yet the reality is that reaching the elite level is incredibly rare. While youth sports offer extraordinary physical and psychological benefits, parents, coaches, and players constantly struggle with the massive financial costs, intense training demands and bad advice from misguided influencers.

Inside Youth Sports: An Expert's and Athlete's Guide to Health, Fitness, Competition, and Better Play is a definitive, science-backed deep dive into the modern playing experience. It cracks open the science behind the muscles, mechanics and minds of developing young athletes.

A Scientist's and Elite Athlete's Perspective

Featuring an engaging, alternating narrative, this youth sports parenting and coaching book brings together two completely unique perspectives:

  • The Scientist: Buel D. Rodgers, PhD, an international leader in muscle biology, neuromuscular development and regenerative medicine.

  • The Athlete: Meilani Y. Rodgers, an elite youth athlete who competed at the national level in soccer and track.

Together, they break down complex sports science, exercise physiology and the psychology of play into practical, easy-to-understand advice for a broad audience.

Mastering Sports Science, Injury Prevention and League Politics

This instructive and insightful guide explores the physiology and psychology of child and adolescent athletes, how they manage the emotional burden and individual challenges of competition, as well as the people, places and market surrounding play.

Key topics carefully detailed for a broad audience include:

  • The Biology of the Developing Athlete: A clear look at complex biological processes, including puberty, growth spurts, the biology of gender and how adolescent bodies handle intense physical training.

  • Injury Prevention & Recovery: The truth about common youth sports injuries, muscle fatigue and the dangerous rehabilitation myths and mythologies that can stall a young athlete's recovery.

  • Youth Sports Psychology & Burnout: Practical strategies for helping kids manage performance anxiety, pressure and the emotional burden of high-stakes competition.

  • Navigating Team Politics & Club Sports: How to handle difficult coaches, league politics, travel team logistics and toxic sports culture without burning out.

  • Championship Coaching Philosophies: Exclusive, detailed interviews with legendary NCAA coaches Anson Dorrance (UNC Women's Soccer) and Geno Auriemma (UConn Women's Basketball)—the winningest coaches in college sports history—offering proven strategies for player development and parental support.

Whether you're a soccer mom, baseball dad, competitive basketball coach, high school athletic director or a parent wondering if travel sports are worth it, Inside Youth Sports provides the scientific understanding and real-world blueprint you need to keep youth sports safe, rewarding, healthy and fun.
